Needless to say, he has been a fixture in the trichology and hair loss treatment world for nearly 2 decades and continues to shape the future of trichology in the US.

Here are 9 questions about hair loss, causes and solutions as answered by William Gaunitz, a renowned trichologist

1 – Was your hair loss hereditary?

I have two forms of clinical hair loss, male pattern hair loss and a rare condition called the diffuse alopecia areata. I inherited the male pattern hair loss from my father’s side so it has to do with genetics. The diffuse alopecia areata is the thinning that goes through the middle of the head and as well as other aspects of the scalp. My mother has the common one which is the alopecia areata which is marginally genetic but the one I have is very rare. While there are various other reasons for hair loss, genetics is one of them.

2 – Can you still lose hair after treatment?

There are 3 major reasons for hair loss, DHT, nutrition, and inflammation. DHT and nutrition related hair loss is easier to treat and is effective. The inflammatory hair loss is a moving target and very individualised. One can control the response but one cannot control the cause of inflammatory scalp condition. To be able to control it would help reduce the hair loss by a certain percentage in comparison to the usual volume. There are so many stressors impacting our body on a regular basis that it needs constant treating.

For nutrition related hair loss, it gets fixed if the vitamin D3 levels are up, iron and zinc levels are up, then this remains static if you are mindful of the diet. But inflammatory hair loss can be triggered by a car accident or a general anesthesia or childbirth.  These are temporary so its treatment remains temporary. If it is a hormone related hair loss, it needs constant attention.  Male pattern loss and female pattern loss are completely manageable. Once you treat it, you shouldn’t have to change your routine much.

3 – People say they lose hair after coming to Dubai, could it be true?

The weather pattern in Arizona is a severe heat and dust condition and I imagine it is similar to Dubai. That kind of weather can create an inflammatory response and cause tremendous nutritional loss. These responses and losses result in hair loss. If they are balanced as per the conditions, it is possible to tackle hair loss as they are indirect and not direct.

4 – How do you diagnose the cause of hair loss?

The cause of hair loss can be different for each person. It is more of an individual approach to diagnosis. I decide the course of treatment depending on the blood type of the individual. If the individual is an O blood type, he or she is going to have a high propensity to inflammatory hair loss. Such an individual needs to increase the intake of meat and vegetables and reduce the intake of sugar. The A blood type needs to eliminate meat entirely but can eat sugar. Everybody is an individual and needs specific treatment.

5 – Do you have plans to set up shop in Dubai?

We are actively moving into that market. We are working on the distribution of the products via Amazon first and that should come soon. Additionally, I am on board of the World Trichologists Society, Middle East. This institution is actively expanding in Dubai and other parts.

6 – What is DHT in hair loss?

DHT is the hormone that is responsible for hormonally related hair loss. DHT related hair loss includes menopause, male pattern loss, postpartum, hormone loss due to hormone replacement, PCOS, and other hormone related hair loss. All these conditions are treated with DHT.

7 – Does PRP treatment work?

If done properly using the right tube and the right procedure, it absolutely works. At least 80% of physicians doing PRP are doing it incorrectly. They are using faulty equipment, the kit they are using to facilitate the separation of the plasma is substandard. Most brands do not give the three to five times platelet concentration that is required to stimulate the hair follicle with the growth factor from the PRP. There is a correct method called the subdermal procedure invented by Dr Jeffrey Rapaport. In this procedure you inject in the subcutaneous fat layer which allows the plasma to proliferate through the subcutaneous fat layer into the dermal layer and it works wonders.

8 – How much does stress contribute to hair loss?

Stress can physically cause hair loss because it can create a trauma that can trigger an inflammatory response. Most times than not stress is causing a physiological response that’s aggravating other reasons for hair loss. If a person is going through stress, the requirement for nutrition in the person’s body increases dramatically. Cortisol levels spike and that has an impact on the adrenal glands which later affects other nutritional factors that are needed. If there is a deficiency of vitamin D then it can influence the immune state and the hair follicles that are protected can be susceptible to fungal growth that lead to hair loss. So stress causes the physiological response which can be compensated by proper nutrition intake or de stressing and thus stress can be overcome so that it does not trigger a physiological response.

9 – What are your key products?

There are many products made to cater to different needs but two of our bestsellers are – one, DHT blocker with immune support, it’s a product that will block hormonally related loss internally and it works best for both men and women dealing with hormonally related loss. The second one is the FoliGrowth Vitamin which is for nutritional loss. There is another one called NutraM which is a topical application product that is an anti DHT product.

There is a quiz on the website https://www.advancedtrichology.com/ which has 14 questions that will help the buyers decide which product is the best for their needs.
